This book is in good plus condition. Gilt lettering and design on spine and front board still bright and well preserved. Moderate surface wear and soiling to the original cloth boards. Previous owner's name on the front pastedown and endpaper. Two illustrated plates are loose and laid in. Interior pages are evenly age-toned and well preserved.
Tess of the d'Urbervilles received mixed reviews when it first appeared, in part because it challenged the sexual morals of late Victorian England. Tess was portrayed as a fighter for her rights and for the rights of others.
