Measuring approximately 10.75" x 9", with 516 & 588 numbered pages. Finely bound in full leather with marbled endsheets. Housed in a custom cloth slipcase.

These volumes are in very good condition. Moderate darkening and cracking to the leather on the spines. Moderate wear to the board edges. Frontispiece in volume one is offered in facsimile. Several scattered instances of marginalia from a previous owner.

Samuel Johnson (1709–1784), was an English writer who made lasting contributions as a poet, playwright, essayist, moralist, literary critic, sermonist, biographer, editor, and lexicographer. The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography calls him "arguably the most distinguished man of letters in English history"
