This book is in very good minus condition. Gilt lettering is still bright and well preserved. Moderate wear and staining to the original cloth boards. Book is slightly cocked giving the textblock an overbite. Previous owner's stamp on the front pastedown. Page 479 - 480 has a large horizontal tear. Interior pages are otherwise clean and well preserved.
The novel deals with themes of betrayal, faith, family, marriage, Imperial Russian society, desire, and the differences between rural and urban life.
