New York: Athenaeum Society, 1894. Hardcover. 12 volume set of the Military Novels and Novels of Adventure by Charles Lever. Published by the Athenaeum Society, New York, 1894. The books measure 5.75" x 8.5". Bound in publisher's original half leather binding over marbled boards, top edge gilt. The set is in good plus condition. The boards are mostly well preserved with moderate shelf wear. Leather is chipped and torn at the spine ends of some volumes, most noticeably at the top spine edge of Jack Hinton and Con Cregan. Leather is dried and cracked on most of the spines and board corners. The front edge of the volume on Maurice Tiernay is starting to detach. On the first volume of Charles O'Malley, the leather on the right side of the spine is missing a large chip. Irish born Lever (1806-72) was a prolific writer much influenced in his early years by Maria Edgeworth and Sir Walter Scott. He is best remembered for his farcical, lighthearted picaresque novels of Irish military life, notably Harry Lorrequer (1839), Charles O'Malley (1841), Jack Hinton (1843), and Tom Burke (1844). These early novels also reveal the marked influence of sporting and military novelist William Hamilton Maxwell, a Peninsular Campaign and Waterloo veteran with whom Lever became friends while fighting a cholera outbreak in County Clare, Ireland. The works include: Roland Cashel, Tom Burke of Ours, Arthur O'Leary, Confessions of Con Cregan, Jack Hinton, Harry Lorrequer, Sir Jasper Carew, Charles O'Malley, Maurice Tiernay.
