Raised bands to the spine with gilt titling and decorations. Top edge gilt. Marbled endsheets. The leather has been conditioned by a professional bookbinder to regain it's suppleness and ensure its longevity for years to come. The set is in near fine condition. Light shelf wear to the boards and spines. Small chip to the top of the spine of Volume I. Faint sunning to some of the leather. The interiors are clean, bright, unmarked, and complete. The bindings are sound. James Russell Lowell was an American poet who was close friends with the "Fireside Poets", a group including Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and other noted writers of the day. His family, which traced its roots back to the Mayflower, would later include the great American poet Robert Lowell.
