First edition from 1849, published in two volumes by Chapman and Hall in London. Beautifully bound in full red leather, with all gilt edges, marbled endpapers, and elaborate gilt dentelles, with black-and-white illustrations by F. W. Hulme and J. Franklin present throughout both volumes. Both volumes measure 4.75'' x 7'', with both volumes being 240 pages. The first volume is in very good plus condition. Some wear to the edges of the boards along the spine, along with a few smudges and discolorations that do not affect the overall quality and preservation of the book. Minor shelf wear to the spine and bumping/scuffing to the corners. The spine is somewhat sunned but the gilt lettering is bright and clean. The gilt edges are largely clean and well-preserved. The marbled endpapers and gilt dentelles are in beautiful shape, bright and well-preserved. A previous owner left their signature and some other markings in inkand pencil on the blank endpapers following the marbled ones. Some markings and underlining throughout the text. Some mild foxing is present throughout the book, but overall the text block and illustrations are bright, clean, and complete. The binding is sound. The second volume is also in very good plus condition.
