London, New York, and Melbourne: Ward, Lock, and Co., 1900. Hardcover. "The Poetical Works of James Russell Lowell", published circa 1900 by Ward, Lock, and Co. 5'' x 7.25'', 623 pages. The book is half-bound in leather with marbled paper boards and endpapers. The edges of the text block are marbled as well. Black-and-white illustrations throughout. The book is in very good plus condition. Minor scuffing and shelf wear to the spine, with the gilt lettering and decoration intact. Some bumping and scuffing to the corners. The sides of the boards are frayed and this has led to some slight cloth loss. Writing in ink and a stamp on the front endpapers. Occasional markings in ink in the text block. The text block (including the illustrations) is toned, but clean, bright, and complete with scattered small instances of foxing. The binding is sound. James Russell Lowell was an American poet who was close friends with the "Fireside Poets", a group including Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and other noted writers of the day. His family, which traced its roots back to the Mayflower, would later include the great American poet Robert Lowell. This volume is a beautiful edition of the writer's work and would make a fine addition to any collector's bookshelf. Please view the many other rare titles available for purchase at our store.
