Toldi

New York: The Co-Operative Press, 1922. 1st Edition. Hardcover. "Toldi" by John (Janos) Arany, translated from its original Hungarian by William N. Loew. Signed by the translator. Published by the Co-Operative Press in New York, circa 1922 (that is when the signature is from). 5'' x 7.5'', 192 pages. The book is in poor condition. Extensive water damage has affected the boards and most of the text block, though that damage des not usually seep into the text itself. Half of the gilt lettering on the front board is faded and obscured. The gilt lettering on the spine is barely visible anymore due to the water damage. A red stain is present on the top of the front board. Shelf wear to the spine. Little bumping to the corners with minor scuffing. The translator's signature in what appears to be Hungarian is written in black ink, along with an inscription, on the front endpaper. The binding is starting at the rear hinge. Minus the aforementioned water damage, the text block is toned but bright, clean, and complete. John (Janos) Arany is considered one of the founding fathers of modern Hungarian poetry. His "Toldi" cycle of poems, about an ancient Hungarian hero, is considered among his finest work.
