Dutch Nursery Rhymes of Colonial Times

Philadelphia: Holland Society of New York, 1890. 1st Edition. Soft cover. "Dutch Nursery Rhymes of Colonial Times" by Mrs. M. P. Ferris (Mary Lanman Douw). First edition, first printing. Published by The Holland Society of New York, to which it was dedicated, 1890. The book is in very good condition. The textblock is loose from the softcover binding. A previous owner's signature is at the top of the front cover. The cover is in impeccable shape. No chipping and very minimal wearing, the cover having retained its bright orange color. A stain is apparent on the front endpaper. There is some foxing to the front endpaper as well as the tissue guard but it doesn't affect the frontispiece, pictured above. Mary Lanman Douw was born in Poughkeepsie, New York in the 1800's, of Dutch descent. After graduating from college, she married Mr. Morris Patterson Ferris. Mrs. Ferris had many notable achievements, including being the founder of The Daughters of Cincinnati, a member of the Colonial Dames of New York, and an important asset in establishing the museum in Van Cortlandt Park, New York (which is now maintained by the Dames of New York). Along with this list of humanitarian efforts, Mrs. Ferris was the editor of The Bulletin of the Society of American Authors and published other books, many focused on Dutch heritage. This book is a truly rare collection of Dutch nursery rhymes by a daughter of Holland. Please view the many other rare titles available for purchase at our store. Good. Item #000353
